State Requirements
In most states, you are required to carry auto liability insurance (or post a
bond) and provide proof of insurance before you can license your vehicle or
renew your driver's license. If you are caught driving without insurance, you
may have to pay a large fine and have your driver's license suspended.
Most states require drivers to carry minimum liability coverage. In many cases,
the required minimum coverage may not be enough to pay for all the damages that
result from an accident and the driver will have to pay the additional expenses
out of pocket.
In California, the minimum liability is $15,000 Bodily Injury Per Person,
$30,000 Bodily Injury Per Accident, and $5,000 Property Damage (15/30/5). These
limits were set decades ago and it does not reflect what is needed today.
We recommend average drivers to have at least (100/300/100) in order to
adequately protect themselves against high medical costs and liability
judgments. In Alameda County for example, the average auto bodily injury
liability award is about $320,000. If you're living in Alameda County and
currently don't have at least (100/300/100), give me a call at (510) 896-9848.
